Girtie Kay's Sweets

Girtie Kay's Sweets

Instagram is great for so many things, including discovering small vegan brands you can support. We recently stumbled on Gertie Kay's Sweets, a company that makes vegan and gluten free sweet potato pies. Yes, you heard that right!

Started as black woman owned business in the 1970's by Gertie in Thibodaux, Louisiana, Gertie Kay's Sweets embodies a love, strength, and a dream that we are all thrilled to have the opportunity to enjoy. We ordered some of the Vegan Mini Sweet Potato Pies and while we did not know what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised. Never having had a sweet potato pie before, we were not sure how sweet, or potato-y, the would be. In the first bite you taste the pastry combined with cinnamon, the sweet potato, and to our liking it wasn't an overpowering taste of potato. The potato is soft but serves as more of a sweet filling, somewhat carmelized, like the inside of a poptart. While you can taste it, it's subtle enough to enjoy without feeling like you're just eating a potato! A great, healthy, vegan, and gluten-free dessert!

They freeze well for and can be enjoyed over 3 months, and can be eaten fresh out of the refrigerator in the first 5 days.

There's no better time to come together and support local businesses, especially those owned by people of color.
